An abstract take on the perched village of Bonnieux

A few years ago, I set off on a fabulous girls trip to Paris and the South of France with my mother and sister. It was the first time in that we had ever traveled together without other family members and we had a wonderful, memorable time. It was also quite nostalgic for me to return to two incredible cities, Paris and Marseille, where my true passion for travel and adventure bloomed. I spent a semester studying abroad in Paris and the following summer living in Marseille. Although I have been back to Paris many times, it was my first visit back to Marseille in almost 20 years. So much had changed yet so much also had remained the same.

One of the highlights of our time in France together was a day trip to visit the spectacular perched villages of Luberon. Each village we visited was more beautiful than the last and one of my favorites by far is Bonnieux. Perched high above the lush valley of Luberon affording a spectacular panoramic view of vineyards, orchards and medieval villages, sits the village of Bonnieux.  Dating back to before Roman times, this picturesque Provencal town is a wonderful place to explore for its simple beauty, tranquility and quintessential Frenchness.

Perhaps what I loved most about Bonnieux is its charming architecture. The terra-cotta tiled rooftops, the colorful painted windows and the playful charm of Bonnieux made me smile. In light of today’s photo challenge, and my latest desire to explore new techniques to photography, I have reworked a series of my photos from this lovely town using the Painterly feature on PhotoMatrix.


I look forward to my upcoming reunion trip with my mom and sister. In two weeks, we are headed to Prague and London, two places once again I haven’t returned since living in Europe in 1993 (Ok, I’m dating myself here a bit!). It should be another epic, memorable time with two people I love dearly and enjoy sharing the world with. Stay tuned…

  7. These all have a really cool painterly look and feel. Even rooftops look cool. Did you do this in the camera, or post process? A very fun look. Prague…I’ve always wanted to go there, haven’t made it yet. Have fun!!

  9. You have really captured the beauty and charm of my favourite village in the Luberon. My husband and I travelled to France last year and fell in love with France and this particular village. They are really gorgeous photos.

  10. I. J. Khanewala – Nowhere-in-particular – I travel on work. When that gets too tiring then I relax by travelling for holidays. The holidays are pretty hectic, so I need to unwind by getting back home. But that means work.

  12. lexklein – I’m a restless, world-wandering, language-loving, book-devouring traveler trying to straddle the threshold between a traditional, stable family life and a free-spirited, irresistible urge to roam. Even when I was young, I always wanted to be somewhere else. I was the kid who loved camp, vacations, sleepovers, and all forms of transportation. Did my restlessness spring from a love of languages and other cultures? From a fiction fixation and all the places I’ve visited on the pages of a globeful of authors? I think it’s more primordial, though, an innate itch that demands scratching at regular intervals. I’m sure I won’t have a travel story every time I add to this blog, but I’ve got a lot! I’m a pretty happy camper (literally), but there is some angst as well as excitement in always having one foot out the door. Come along for the trip as I take the second step …

  14. Alison and Don – Occupation: being/living/experiencing/travelling. In our sixties, with apparently no other authentic option, my husband Don and I sold our apartment and car, sold or gave away all our stuff and set off to discover the world. And ourselves. We started in Italy in 2011 and from there have travelled to Spain, India, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia, South America, Egypt, Japan, etc. - you can see the blog archive. We travelled full-time for nearly six years, and then re-established a home in Vancouver. We now travel 2-3 months per year. We are interested in how the world works, how life works, how the creation of experience works, how the mind works. As we travel and both "choose" our course, and at the same time just let it unfold, we discover the "mechanics" of life, the astounding creativity of life, and a continual need to return to trust and presence. Opening the heart, and acceptance of what is, as it is, are keystones for us both. Interests: In no particular order: travel, photography, figure skating (as a fan), acceptance, authenticity, walking/hiking, joy, creativity, being human, adventure, presence, NOW. Same for Don except replace figure skating with Formula One motor racing.

  19. restlessjo – Hi! I’m Jo! Johanna when I’m feeling posh, Jan to my Dad, and Joasiu to my Polish family. A bit of a mix-up, that’s me. The one constant, however, is my restless nature.   20. Darshan – Austin, Texas – Here I am, talking about myself and realizing that there is still lot to rediscover within myself. Well I am human, 100% Homo Sepian, a city dweller from 21st Century A.C. relying on these more fragile and temporary storage devices, based on electricity and magnetic properties. Guyz I do work on technologies, but not really a techie at heart. What I love is the cool breeze, chirping birds, giggles of little ones and all that is natural and beautiful. So when my mind starts yelling, I look out to run away from my, so called home in the City to find some peace, tranquility, beauty and harmony. By this time you would have figured out that I am a Piscean. So here is this window from word press, that I use to share, connect and communicate. This is my notepad where I scribble that pops out of my mind and paint the pictures that take away my heart. I am not a poet and not even a painter. But I try and play around with words, to express every emotion I feel and every experience that I gather as I keep rediscovering people, relations, nature, journey’s and the life as a whole. I look at life as a long journey and every moment that you spend in this journey to connect with people and sharing thoughts, helping each other, makes your final destination much satisfying and rewarding.
