Dinner in the Alps

A few years ago, my father and I did a seven day hike in the French Alps of Savoie at Vanoise National Park. Each day, we rose to the fresh, pure air of the mountains and hiked through breathtaking alpine scenery. As much as I love hiking, the best part of the day was when we arrived at our refuge for the night and sipped glass after glass of earthy Vin de Savoie as the sun set over the Alps and indulged in a delicious meal of local french cheese, meats, baguette and homemade root vegetable soup. Chicken or fish with savory rice or potatoes and pasta was next, followed by homemade dessert every night. There is nothing better than being rewarded with an enormous meal after a day hiking.

Heading up to our first refuge for the night.

The reward

Fromage blanc with fresh berries

Another refuge

Fresh apple pie

What a view!

Sunset

My favorite refuge in the Alps with gourmet food!

And the best cheese of all

I still have yet to find Vin de Savoie in the States. I think I will need to go on another hike in the Alps!

What a wonderful time you must have had. I was reminded of the time I lived in Geneva and would drive off to Savoie sometimes on weekends for a summer day’s walk. Lovely countryside, with cheeses and wines I liked.

  5. Alison and Don – Occupation: being/living/experiencing/travelling. In our sixties, with apparently no other authentic option, my husband Don and I sold our apartment and car, sold or gave away all our stuff and set off to discover the world. And ourselves. We started in Italy in 2011 and from there have travelled to Spain, India, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia, South America, Egypt, Japan, etc. - you can see the blog archive. We travelled full-time for nearly six years, and then re-established a home in Vancouver. We now travel 2-3 months per year. We are interested in how the world works, how life works, how the creation of experience works, how the mind works. As we travel and both "choose" our course, and at the same time just let it unfold, we discover the "mechanics" of life, the astounding creativity of life, and a continual need to return to trust and presence. Opening the heart, and acceptance of what is, as it is, are keystones for us both. Interests: In no particular order: travel, photography, figure skating (as a fan), acceptance, authenticity, walking/hiking, joy, creativity, being human, adventure, presence, NOW. Same for Don except replace figure skating with Formula One motor racing.

What a wonderful time that must have been Nicole. It’s holiday I’d enjoy that’s for sure. Gorgeous countryside. It reminds me a little of my time in the Yukon and Northern BC.

Stunning photos as usual Nicole. I’m with you though, nothing beats after a long hard invigorating trek sitting back with a glass of red and enjoying wholesome food. My mum always said that food tastes better in the great outdoors.

We only carried a small amount of clothing so not too heavy as we didn’t need sleeping bags or food. Just our clothing for six days and toiletries and camera of course.
