Macy’s Flower Show: An Explosion of “Art in Bloom”

“Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature”. – Gerard De Nerval

Every year, Macy’s Department Store rewards the public by putting on an incredible flower show at its five flagship stores in the United States. It is the highlight of my month because Macy’s Annual Flower Show falls at the end of March, right before spring break when everyone in Minneapolis is just plain sick and tired of our long, barren, colorless winter.

What makes this event even more wonderful is that it is free and the theme changes every year. This year, the theme is “Art in Bloom” and with the help of local florist Bachman’s, the show features thousands of eye-popping, gorgeous flowers juxtaposed with various movements of the arts resulting in a “horticultural art gallery” of color and fragrance.

Despite my head cold, I could smell the flowers as I rode the escalator up to the eighth floor of Macy’s in downtown Minneapolis. I could take the elevator but I find riding the escalator up way more fun as each floor the smell of flowers escalates. I brought only my iPhone 6 along as I wanted to see how much the technology has changed from my old iPhone 4 camera to the 6. It was remarkable and I still cannot believe that these photos are real.

Take a peak for yourself and walk with me through Macy’s “Art in Bloom” where we will pass through Classical Art, Impressionism, Modern Art and Pop Culture Art. I am certain these photos will brighten your day!

As I continued through the flowers, I was mesmerized by their stunning, absolute beauty.

Modern art…

 Pop culture art…

I just couldn’t pick a favorite flower as I loved them all so much. (Again, click on each photo to see them enlarged. It is definitely worth the effort!).

It only took me a half hour to walk through the show. In Minneapolis alone, an estimated 65,000 visitors come to see the gorgeous annual Flower Show. It will be hard to top this off next year. I can’t wait to see what they do!

If you go:

Minneapolis is one of five stores in the US that hosts the Annual Flower Show. It runs in Minneapolis from March 22-April 4th during store hours. Other locations include: New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington DC.

  1. Absolutely stunning! I was in New York once for Macy’s flower show. I never wanted to leave. I will have some of those flowers (not the orchids) at Casa Debbio soon.

I would love to see the flower show in NYC! This is my third year going and I love it so much. It is a highlight, so beautiful. Can’t wait to see your flowers at Casa Debbio!

  2. scillagrace – Oregon – I began this blog when I entered my 50th year of life. I have always enjoyed writing and taking photographs. My sister did a profound personal photo project the year she was turning 50, so once again, I followed in her footsteps, taking her idea and doing it my way. My life has changed dramatically in recent years, and I have changed with it. My husband died, my kids moved out, I sold our home and moved to Wisconsin, then followed my kids to Oregon. I suppose I have a lot to process, and I'm sure there will be more.

My dad used to take us to flower shows at Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago in the dead of winter. What heaven to walk into a humid, fragrant greenhouse and take off our winter coats! Crowds and retail are not my thing, but flowers before Spring are a treat to the winter weary. The botanic gardens in Chicago has an orchid festival (indoors) going on now, I think.

OMG, these are gorgeous. And I can’t wait to get my iPhone 6 in June! I think my favorite was the Van Gogh, but hard to choose. I just have to try and see if I can get in to the San Francisco store; it’s been years since I have for the spring flowers.

Ha Ha. I was amazed Andrew at how much better the camera is on my 6 plus the phone is so much lighter weight. I traded mine in and got the upgrade for under $100. Worth it!
