A Burst of Color at Macy’s Secret Garden Show

This has been a very long winter. It has been known as the coldest winter in 30 years with 50 days below zero degrees (our average is 20). Even our local weatherman Paul Douglas made fun of our unbearable winter with a badge we could wear that said “I survived the worst winter ever”. Although it is technically spring, sadly our winter is long from over.

Yesterday feeling the effects of a long, harsh winter on a whim I drove to downtown Minneapolis and headed to some much needed color and inspiration at the Macy’s Secret Garden Show. As I rode up the escalator to the eighth floor auditorium, I could smell the delicious fragrance of flowers that became happily overpowering as I headed to the entrance. I was entranced by that long forgotten smell.

As soon as I stepped inside The Secret Garden I was in heaven. My pure white world exploded into vibrant hues of pinks, reds, yellows and orange. Those long forgotten pleasures to the eyes that brought a smile to my tired soul.

Come, take a walk with me through Macy’s Secret Garden. Close your eyes after and inhale the sweet fragrance of a million flowers.

Last year’s event was called The Painted Garden and was mostly orchids. Here is a copy of my post in case you need more visual stimulation and eye candy.

If you go:

Macy’s Flower Show is currently running in the following cities:

Minneapolis
New York
Philadelphia
Chicago
San Francisco
Washington DC. (Cherry Blossom show)
Minneapolis’ show is from March 23-April 6th and is free.

Sue Slaght – Calgary, Alberta Canada – www.traveltalesoflife.com Many years from now, when I am an old lady sitting in the nursing home, I hope to be the twinkly eyed resident still entertaining anyone who I can corner to listen, about all of the wild adventures attempted in a lifetime. Well into the second half of the game of life there is no time like the present to get out there, live big and laugh a lot. Living in Calgary, Alberta, married to my best friend Dave for over thirty years and Mom to adult children; my decades as a nurse have shown that in a moment life can change completely. Passionate about social justice, volunteerism and not letting the phrase “What would people think?” or my own fear get in the way of trying something new; the possibilities are endless. Enjoy the tales and I hope you will be inspired to try something you have been thinking about doing.

Definitely a sight for sore or frozen eyes. I love the mannequin and her floral skirt.

We are more or less retired, meaning we are retired from gainful employment but not from life! Our son lives in Australia and our daughter in Colorado. Photography, fiber arts, reading, and hiking/walking are some of my interests, and David shares my love of gardening, camping, cooking, and traveling, plus he is our tech expert.

What a splendid flower experience! I especially like the close-ups of the orchids, as the patterns and shapes of their “internal organs” are always so intriguing. I recently visited an Orchid House that is in a small botanical garden/reserve in San Cristóbal, Chiapas, Mexico, that houses over 200 types of the more than 700 wild varieties that exist in Chiapas alone. It’s amazing how tiny some of them are! Their site is http://www.orchidsmexico.com.
Your comments about the weather are also interesting. We live half of our lives in Alaska, and there the weather patterns are changing to warmer and milder. We have lived there almost 40 years and even in that blip of geological time, the difference is obvious.

  3. even here on the equator where explosions of color are common, i was with you on this journey and could imagine what a welcome balm it was to you! with the slow internet, not all of the images loaded, but i was grateful for what came through!

it would have been hard for me to leave such beauty! z

  4. I was in New York one year for the Macy’s flower show. I went up and down the escalators over and over again to take it all in, it was simply stunning. My favourites are always the peonies. Mine is growing in the garden at Casa Debbio and today I planted 2 more. Spring has been put on hold here and we have rain and cold weather. There has been snow on the mountains around us, which looks very pretty, but it is time for spring now.

I bet it is unbelievable to see the flower show in NYC! Yesterday it was cold and snowing. We have no sign of winter leaving so I had to see these gorgeous flowers. Hopefully it will warm up for you soon as well in lovely Italy but I bet the snow is quite lovely on the mountains!

  5. restlessjo – Hi! I’m Jo! Johanna when I’m feeling posh, Jan to my Dad, and Joasiu to my Polish family. A bit of a mix-up, that’s me. The one constant, however, is my restless nature. I love to travel and to explore our world. It doesn’t have to be the big wide world. I can be ridiculously happy not too far from home, so long as I’m seeking new horizons. Of course I have a wish list, and it was to help me fulfil my dreams that I started to write travel guides for a venture called Simonseeks. I’d always kept a travel diary, and it was hugely satisfying to share my experiences and to make new friends who shared my passion for travel. Alas, Simonseeks hit a few troubles, but I still find myself writing about my travels. I’ve become addicted. I’d love to share them, and to make more friends. So, it has to be a blog- right? Or do I mean- write?

  6. anotherday2paradise – Durban South Africa and Florida USA – I enjoy writing about absolutely anything, and started blogging with WordPress in 2012. This was my 'Hammock Lady' blog, and I really enjoyed sharing my travels here: http://adinparadise.wordpress.com/ In November 2013, I decided it was time for a change of scenery, so I started my blog afresh, and here it is. I love to travel, and have been fortunate enough to do two round-the-world trips and visit more than forty countries so far. This year we visited our 7th continent, Antarctica. I enjoy photographing wildlife, especially in my backyard in Florida. I was born and brought up in England. My husband and I emigrated to South Africa in 1970. We now live in Florida, USA. I have a son and a daughter and five gorgeous grandchildren currently aged between 6 and 21 years. I'm so happy that you've taken the time to visit my blog, and would love for you to join me on my travels. Sylvia.

  8. Love your post and it has inspired me…going on Wednesday! Kind of on a tight timeframe though as I need to be back home in time to pick up kiddos after school. How long would you say it takes to get through the show, assuming a leisurely walking pace?

Wonderful! It actually is not very big and probably only takes 15-30 minutes or less to walk through at a leisurely pace. It can get crowded. It wasn’t too bad when I went around 130 pm but when my friend went the next day around 10 she said it was very crowded. Definitely worth the visit!
