Juxtaposition: A Photo Essay

jux·ta·po·si·tion
noun
  • the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect.”the juxtaposition of these two images”

This week’s photo challenge is one of my absolute favorites: Juxtaposition. As a traveler, we often see juxtaposition wherever we look. Contrasting and even sometimes confusing images appear that make us open our minds and think. In fact, juxtaposition is a great way of teaching us about the world around us and how other cultures are similar and different than our own.

Following is a compilation of some of my most favorite intriguing images I’ve captured that have lead me to question and ponder on the meaning.

India

Men Washing

Selling flower in the slum

Girl in the Red Dress

Sacred cow

The Fruit Seller

Guatemala

The ruins of a church

Erupting volcano

Woman begging in front of a church

Barefoot farmers

“Hiking” shoe left behind from a Mayan girl climbing a volcano.

Selling fabrics outside of church

Honduras

Cows taking a stroll on the beach

Wired Church

Nepal

The Heaven Guest House – the worst place we stayed at in rural Nepal

Hotel Dreamhouse

China

The Forbidden City of Smog

Suit on Bike

Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed! 🙂

  1. Excellent response to the challenge, Nicole. Hadn’t seen that this week’s topic was juxtaposition. What always amazes me is that you can churn these out on the same day the topic is announced. Way cool!

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

  4. Jono Cusack – See Something is a stage to tell these stories. The heroes, heroines and bravado of our journey into the unknown. The real comedies and tragedies we share at a bar with our friends, at a dinner with our closest and dearest, or even the ones we keep in our hearts. It’s not a place to advise a trip, it’s not a guide to show us the planet. It’s of our passion and struggle to search for what’s out there. These are for us. 5. TravelinPixels – I am a 22 year old history student currently working on my bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. I was born and raised in a village near Tarnow, Poland roughly a 100km east of the beautiful city of Krakow. When I was ten years old and barely began third grade, my family immigrated to Chicago where I continued to live until I moved closer to my university in August of 2012. Throughout my teenage years, I developed a passion for photography. As a gift for my confirmation, I was rewarded with first very own SLR camera. Ever since, photography played a major role in my life not only as a hobby, but also became my main source of income. In the summer of 2008, I was introduced to a current dear friend of mine who spent her free time traveling and writing about her experiences. After getting to know one another, she poisoned me with the disease so called “desire to travel”. I viewed the world as a master piece and developed a desire to explore its beauties. The idea of creating a blog came when a friend of mine asked to share some of my photos from a previous trip. After having to search for them in my archives (a box of CDs), I took several hours to look through them and finally decided to somehow share them with people who will appreciate my glimpse of the world.

Your photos show great character and tell a story. Very nice!

  6. Haha! The shoe left behind. No wonder it was left behind. Climbing a volcano with a wedge shoe? I love this collection. I wish I had my photo of our trip to the top of the Alps. When we arrived at the peak, there was a sign with a picture of a high heeled shoe and it was crossed out. Who in the world would climb the Alps with 8 inch heels? lol

  7. Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist – Sunshine Coast Qld – I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  14. jalisalisa – Oklahoma City – Hi there! My name is Jalisa Ross, I am a senior Political Science major at Oklahoma City University. I am an educated Native American Woman and proud of it! I have grown up and lived in Oklahoma my entire life and love my state (despite the overwhelming conservatism... we're trying to work on it). I hope to finish school in December and work off my Student Loans in order to travel the world helping to make it a better place to live in. I am very interested in social justice issues and look forward to exploring the injustices of the world in order to help right them. I believe in the vitality of the Native Woman and continue to learn my the example my elders set before me. It doesn't take much to make me happy- a nice cup of hot tea and a good book to pass the time is all I need... or you know, lots of wine. Cheers!

Wow, the woman begging at the church really spoke to me about the state of society and church right now. Thank you for the post!

I enjoyed yours too! What a great photo of the lady and it is ironic next to the young women on the ice cream freezer. I would love to go to Tibet! 🙂

  15. anotherday2paradise – Durban South Africa and Florida USA – I enjoy writing about absolutely anything, and started blogging with WordPress in 2012. This was my 'Hammock Lady' blog, and I really enjoyed sharing my travels here: http://adinparadise.wordpress.com/ In November 2013, I decided it was time for a change of scenery, so I started my blog afresh, and here it is. I love to travel, and have been fortunate enough to do two round-the-world trips and visit more than forty countries so far. This year we visited our 7th continent, Antarctica. I enjoy photographing wildlife, especially in my backyard in Florida. I was born and brought up in England. My husband and I emigrated to South Africa in 1970. We now live in Florida, USA. I have a son and a daughter and five gorgeous grandchildren currently aged between 6 and 21 years. I'm so happy that you've taken the time to visit my blog, and would love for you to join me on my travels. Sylvia.
