“Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
After visiting lovely Lourmarin, our next stop on our tour of the perched villages of Luberon was beautiful Bonnieux. Perched high above the lush valley of Luberon affording a spectacular panoramic view of vineyards, orchards and medieval villages, sits the village of Bonnieux. Dating back to before Roman times, this picturesque Provencal town is a wonderful place to explore for its simple beauty, tranquility and quintessential Frenchness.
We spent an hour wandering along the narrow cobblestone streets of Bonnieux following a steep set of 86 stairs leading up to the 12th century “Eglise Haute” which rests atop the village with a birds-eye view of Luberon. As you hike up to the church, you pass by 800-year old buildings graced with burnt orange terracotta rooftops and dramatic views of the countryside.
The view from Bonnieux is out over plains of Luberon awash with vineyards, fields and cherry orchards. Further in the distance you can see tiny medieval villages which are worth a visit.
Taking a walk and exploring the lovely village of Bonnieux is sure to involve many stops and photos along the way.
