Finding liberation at Liberty Bowl

Day three skiing at Big Sky meant it was time to pick it up a notch and hit the bowls. There is nothing more liberating and invigorating than physically challenging your body. It was time to hit the blacks.

We traveled with another family to Montana and my friend and I rode the gondola up to the top to hit the back bowls. It was another sensational, postcard perfect day. I felt more alive than I had in months.

The top affords perhaps one of the most breathtaking views in all of Big Sky. You can see for miles and miles and can even catch a glimpse of the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. Spring skiing also means no racing, bone-chilling wind. Just absolute perfection.

After a few photo ops, it was time to hit the bowl. View from on top of the world. No wonder they call the ski area Big Sky!

Going down the long, bumpy bowl.

Taking a break to catch my breath (yes my heart was pounding) and grab one last fabulous photo of the insanely gorgeous terrain and landscape. It was breathtaking in more ways than one!

“I don’t know if it’s just me or everyone, but the whole vibe with skiing is not so much thriving on competition against others as it is against myself and the clock”. -Picabo Street

We got to the bottom and were drenched in sweat yet elated. What a fabulous ride!

Author’s note: In case you are wondering, I did not carry a big camera with me while skiing. All these photos were shot with my tiny iPhone camera!

Stay tuned…

  1. i have never seen snow..in real. Just in photos and movies. All your photos of snow and skiing and mountains are over whelming. I may never see snow, let alone ski …your photos are the closest I can get to it.

Thanks so much! I live in Minnesota so I’ve had snow my entire life. The snow out here in Montana is so nice and sticky now. Just perfect. 🙂 So thrilled you enjoyed! Where do you live?

What a picture-perfect day — Lutsen is as wild as I have gotten for downhill skiing in the past decade, and have to admit to being content on greens and blues, so thank you for letting me vicariously ski through you today :-)! Glad you are enjoying your time in Big Sky country.

Yes, you can definitely get hurt pretty bad. I’ll ski as long as I’m able. My dad is 70 and I am finally able to pass him down the hill. He is so fast! 🙂

  3. Harold Green – San Miguel de Allende, Mexico – I love exploring different cultures of our world with my wife Rita and my Nikon SLR camera. I try to bring back the overlaying rich textures of a different country’s lifestyle. To capture a moment in time as I float down a river, walk a mud-street village, hike a sand dune at sunrise, stroll up a jungle trail or cruise through the workshop of a regional craftsman, is a pleasure and a dream. It is a joy of mine to share these images with children and young students in hopes that my images will inspire a few of them to travel and explore in-depth other cultures of the world with an open mind. I am a professional photographer with a host of digital SLR gear. I am retired and live in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with my wife Rita. In my previous life I owned an advertising/public relations agency in Houston, Texas where I launched my 25-year career as the agency’s Creative Director. Upon retirement, in 1989, I moved full-time to the island of Martha’s Vineyard before moving to Mexico in 2001. I was born in upstate New York in the small town of Auburn on the Finger Lakes. I attended The Northwood Preparatory School in Lake Placid, New York. After graduation I received a degree in advertising and marketing from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. The inspiration for my love of photography came from my father, who was an amateur photographer. As a young child, I spent many hours in his darkroom helping him hang black & white prints with a clothes pin.

Ha Ha! Love that. I’ve got quite the extreme personality when it comes to outdoor sports so for me it was truly fun to test my limits and ski my heart out. In fact, I think I skied the best I ever have which makes me feel good at 41. Then again, my dad is 70 and he screams down the hill still. I’ve got good genes!

      • yes,m my father had great genes as well, and we’re lucky to have had positive fathers who also took good care of themselves.

the last time i went skiing was years ago when my sons were in high school. i took quite a fall and left a string of clothes/accessories for a long distance. the guys i was skiing with said if i’d lost one more item of clothing they would have given me a ’10.’

i realized how close i came to breaking a bone/bones and wondered how on earth i would have managed teaching, parenting and being married while in a body cast! i’ve always prefered the warm weather, so after that i chose warm-weather sports! z
