The Bays of Roatan

Jakesprinter’s Sunday post theme is “Bay“. I realized that most of my travels are to mountains or other locales that do not typically include bays. Then as I glanced over at my copy of Lonely Planet: Honduras, I realized the cover said “Honduras and The Bay Islands“. Silly me, Roatan could be included in this challenge and I spent an entire morning touring her lovely bays and remote villages, way off the beaten tourist path.

Roatan is the largest and most developed of the three Islas de la Bahia or “Bay Islands” and is nearly 50 kilometers long. The island is a tropical paradise with mountains covered in jungle in its center and gorgeous beaches along the sides. What I discovered on my driving tour is that you can always see the beach and its lovely bays from the road. I was really amazed at how narrow the island is but it is almost like Roatan was formed that way on purpose so you would never be left without a stunning view of the ocean and her beautiful bays.

Along the way, we stopped for the view at a local Garifuna market…

Then we headed to some of the secluded bays where fancy resorts lie…

And back to more of the local villages…

Alas, Simonseeks hit a few troubles, but I still find myself writing about my travels. I’ve become addicted. I’d love to share them, and to make more friends. So, it has to be a blog- right? Or do I mean- write?

      Roatan was my favorite. I’d love to go back someday and get certified. It has amazing diving and I am sure my kids would love the snorkeling. someday!!
