The Perched Villages of Luberon: Bonnieux

“Not all those who wander are lost.”  –  J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

After visiting lovely Lourmarin, our next stop on our tour of the perched villages of Luberon was beautiful Bonnieux.  Perched high above the lush valley of Luberon affording a spectacular panoramic view of vineyards, orchards and medieval villages, sits the village of Bonnieux.  Dating back to before Roman times, this picturesque Provencal town is a wonderful place to explore for its simple beauty, tranquility and quintessential Frenchness.

We spent an hour wandering along the narrow cobblestone streets of Bonnieux following a steep set of 86 stairs leading up to the 12th century “Eglise Haute” which rests atop the village with a birds-eye view of Luberon.  As you hike up to the church, you pass by 800-year old buildings graced with burnt orange terracotta rooftops and dramatic views of the countryside.

Lovely Bonnieux with her beautiful terracotta rooftops captured my heart and camera.

Climb all the stone stairs to the top of Bonnieux and here is your view.

Eglise Haute on top of Bonnieux.

The view from Bonnieux is out over plains of Luberon awash with vineyards, fields and cherry orchards. Further in the distance you can see tiny medieval villages which are worth a visit.

Gorgeous views like this one of the fertile countryside are common throughout Bonnieux.

Taking a walk and exploring the lovely village of Bonnieux is sure to involve many stops and photos along the way.

I love this gorgeous decorative bell and rooftop

If you go

Here is a great website I found that has a wealth of tourist information to plan your visit.  Also feel free to check out the Luberon Tourism Board which has a wealth of information on the area.

  2. restlessjo – Hi! I’m Jo! Johanna when I’m feeling posh, Jan to my Dad, and Joasiu to my Polish family. A bit of a mix-up, that’s me. The one constant, however, is my restless nature. I love to travel and to explore our world. It doesn’t have to be the big wide world. I can be ridiculously happy not too far from home, so long as I’m seeking new horizons. Of course I have a wish list, and it was to help me fulfil my dreams that I started to write travel guides for a venture called Simonseeks. I’d always kept a travel diary, and it was hugely satisfying to share my experiences and to make new friends who shared my passion for travel. Alas, Simonseeks hit a few troubles, but I still find myself writing about my travels. I’ve become addicted. I’d love to share them, and to make more friends. So, it has to be a blog- right? Or do I mean- write?
