Finding Serenity in the Jungle of Costa Rica

I spent seven days in the remote jungle of the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, a place that contains 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity and is Mother Nature at her best. I basically lived outside for a week, spending my days immersed in rainforests, waterfalls and the sea, and sleeping almost open-air each night to the music of the jungle. The sounds, smells, and sense of being completely engulfed in nature filled my wary soul with much needed rejuvenation and life. It was a magical trip to a stunning place alive with awe and wonder.

Our Family Costa Rican Adventure: A Stay at a Farm near Arenal

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”  -Roald Dahl As we inched up the gravel road at a snail’s speed, we admired the sensational beauty of our surroundings….

Exploring Rural Tourism in Dos Brazos de Tigre, Costa Rica

Although the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica was a hot spot for gold and logging opportunists in the 1960s, it remains relatively undeveloped. Many communities like Dos Brazos de Tigre can be hard to reach especially during rainy season when the dirt roads are washed away and the rivers are too high to cross. Some of the most remote areas are only reachable on foot, horse, ATV or boat.

Landgut Wagnerfeld, Lake Traunsee, Austria

A Stay at the Landgut Wagnerfeld Farm in Traunsee, Austria

The Salzkammergut is one of seven regions in Austria most known for its breathtaking scenery of high alpine lakes (there are 76 lakes in the region), rugged remote wilderness peppered with lovely scenic villages and towns like the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt and Daschstein. If you are one who loves mountains and lakes, then this is the region for you. Besides its aching beauty and endless opportunities to connect with nature whether it be by hiking, biking, boating, swimming or sailing, there are plenty of wonderful places to stay. We loved staying on a farm at the family-run Landgut Wagnerfeld where Austrian hospitality meets relaxation and peace.

A Stay in the Jungle at Amazonita Lodge: An Ecolodge in the Heart of Costa Rica

The Amazonita Lodge in Dos Brazos in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica is run by a local woman named Zulay, who is not only the manager and caretaker of the lodge but also a masseuse. I was instantly drawn to Zulay’s warm, charismatic personality. She welcomed us into the lodge with open-arms and of course a cup of Costa Rican coffee.  We would be staying at the jungle cabins a short distance up the hill from Zulay’s house. Little did I know what a delightful surprise I was in for!

The Osa Peninsula’s Crown Jewel: Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park located in the remote Osa Peninsula is Costa Rica’s crown jewel. Created in 1975 by the government to protect and conserve this amazing place, the park contains over 50% of Costa Rica’s biodiversity and is the last remnant of humid tropical rainforest on the Pacific Coast of Central America. It is the largest national park in all of Costa Rica and covers one-third of the Osa Peninsula. It is home to over 750 species of trees (1/4 of tree species in Costa Rica), 390 species of birds, 6,000 species of insects, and 140 species of mammals, and 116 species of reptiles and amphibians. It also is one of the only places in Costa Rica that has all four species of monkeys – howler, white-face, squirrel and spider, and has the largest concentration of scarlet macaws in the country.
