Winter’s Serenity

“Mirth is like a flash of lightning, that breaks through a gloom of clouds, and glitters for a moment; cheerfulness keeps up a kind of daylight in the mind, and fills it with a steady and perpetual serenity”. – Joseph Addison

Winter can be extremely long and grueling here in Minnesota. I’ve learned long ago that the art to surviving a Minnesota winter means embracing it. Layer up, lace the boots and put on a pair of snowshoes. Get outside and enjoy the serenity of a beautiful winter wonderland.

I read in the paper that the Minnehaha Falls had finally froze over and it was attracting a lot of attention. Photographers and thrill seekers were going to explore the frozen falls, risking some serious injuries to get up close and personal on the treacherous ice. Many did not heed the posted warning or listen to the park policeman yelling at them to get out from behind the falls.

I took these shots of the magical frozen falls from above where it was safe. Did I want to get a photo like this amazing one I saw in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, heck yeah! But I wasn’t going to risk it. Instead, I grabbed these photos below using my iPhone and stared in awe and wonder at the incredible beauty of winter in Minnesota.

First sight of the frozen Minnehaha Falls.

Who would have thought there could be so much beauty and complexity in ice?

  1. It’s beautiful. I have never seen Frozen Falls in real. Hope to see them someday. Nature has its tricks – some freeze, some don’t. Great post with some wonderful quotes.

  2. Every season has its beauty, doesn’t it, Nicole, and venturing out into the cold can be so rewarding. I really like the quotes as well and have filched a couple of them for my quote file. 🙂 Thanks!

    • Thanks Angeline! The main photo on the link is a man riding his bike behind the falls! It is an incredible photo that I couldn’t get because you aren’t supposed to walk behind the falls. But oh how I wanted to!

  3. I’ve always wondered about the frozen falls in Narnia and suspected it was just a filmic trick! Thank you for showing the real thing to this amazed South African.

    • I bet the falls there were amazing LuAnn! Loved your post today! 🙂 Good to hear from you. Sounds like you are living in a wonderful place with so much to do!

  4. I like the Instagrammed ones, Nicole 🙂 Gives them a bit more drama (as if that were possible!) I haven’t checked the link yet but I doubt he could better these 🙂

Can’t even imagine how cold it must have been to freeze such a body of water. I like your decision to embrace the cold. Great pics.
