In honor of the amazing news today and International Day of the Girl tomorrow, I am dedicating this post to one amazing young woman who risked her life for her belief that all girls should have the right to go to school. Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban two years ago for her desire to learn was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this morning along with Kailash Satyarthi of India, a campaigner for the end of child labor and freeing children from trafficking.

At 17, Malala is the youngest ever winner of a Nobel Prize. Since the shocking news hit the world that young Malala was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman, Malala has fought tirelessly for the rights of girls worldwide to go to school. After her remarkable recovery in a British hospital, Malala has become a global icon for girl’s rights. To further her work, she co-founded the Malala Fund with her father Ziauddin Yousafzai (an educator and social activist) and Shiza Shahid (a Pakistani social entrepreneur and activist) to amplify, advocate and invest in girl’s education. Congratulations Malala on following your dreams! You are amazing and truly changing the world.

These girls need you and others to stand up for their right to education.

  1. I wrote a song with that express feeling. I should have called it Malala’s Song, but I called it “Ecoutez-Moi” from the album Manaus Where Two Rivers Meet. It is a topic very close to my heart.

      1. Me too. That young girl (now a woman) has a lot of courage. She will take her country far into the future.

  2. Here, here, an amazingly inspiring story and an objective that will one day overcome the worst aspects of cultures ruled by religious dogma. She is an example to us all.

  3. Excellent post and photos. This came at the most opportune time when we are celebrating one of the biggest successes of human kinds, and that too achieved by a just 17-year old girl. I wonder sometimes when a 17-year old can think and commit herself to such a cause for the betterment of the society, why there is so much unrest in this world, so much anarchy, so much intolerance. Why humans are so willing to taste the blood of other humans. This is so terrible. I really wish that the achievements of these two leading lights will inspire many more and we will have more such Malalas and Kailashs in this world.

    1. Yes she is amazing. Just shows what one person can do in the world to make a difference, if you never give up on following your heart and your beliefs.

  4. Awesome post and photos! It truly is amazing some of the small things like education that we take advantage of. It’s awesome to see the people who dedicate their lives exposing the hardships that young women around the world must go through simply to become successful members of society! Your work is truly awesome!

  5. Very well said. I share in your passion to see a world where all children are going to school.
We can all make a difference.
