Perhaps one of the most spectacular marvels of Mother Nature I’ve ever witnessed is the majestic Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina. Spanning an area of 250 square kilometers/97 square miles and 30 km/19 miles in length, the sheer magnitude of this massive piece of layered ice is incomprehensible.
Ice trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier was one of my highlights to a trip to Southern Patagonia in 2009. Take a peak for yourself and see the immense beauty and power of Argentina’s premier glacier.

long lost amiga!
i returned home about an hour ago and am making a really fast internet stop before house cleaning after being away for three months, i have a lot of items that need attention.. thirsty plants, dusty floors, but wow, i will have slow internet, but at least i’m home and will be able to read more tonight when the usb/phone system works faster…

A stunning spectacle. We regretted having missed our flight to El Calafate due to ash clouds that closed Buenos Aires airport for just those two days!
I was there too Nicole — we actually witnessed Perito breaking up! My husband caught some phenomenal photos of the calving — the booming noise was just amazing.
I definitely need to add this to my list of places to visit. Beautiful.
Yes Chile and Argentina, especially in Patagonia, are the most beautiful places I’ve been except Nepal is up there too. Such surreal landscape!

Fantastic shots Nicole, as always. I agree: glaciers are quite thrilling manifestations of the force of nature and, especially from a distance, quite beautiful as you’ve shown in your last shot. I’ll never forget the thrill I had walking on the Rhone glacier, and then into it, in a tunnel they (still?) drilled into the ice – standing there, with the light bringing the ice to life was tingling.

Such a beautiful place. I spent some time in Patagonia a few years ago, and that was one of my favourite parts. I could have spent hours there just STARING at it, but alas I was on a coach trip and got hurried away after just 2hrs.
