The wisdom of a bench

This week’s travel theme by  Where’s My Backpack is benches. The beauty of a bench is something sometimes easily missed. Yet for me, as I live in Minnesota, land of 10,000 lakes and many beautiful parks, there are benches everywhere.

Benches are wonderful because they offer a place to sit and relax and also to contemplate typically in a place of beauty. Oftentimes in our busy lives, we don’t take time to simply sit on a bench and reflect on our lives. When I’m running around the lake on a beautiful day, sometimes I’m envious as I pass by people who are doing just so, sitting and relaxing on one of the lake’s many benches and enjoying the view. Maybe once the snow melts, I’ll take more time to sit and relax. To reflect on life, past, present and future. To enjoy the benches.

There are sometimes the unexpected benches…

And then there are the benches of wisdom…

IMG_6079 IMG_6082 IMG_6081Let’s just hope that once the snow melts and Spring finally arrives in Minnesota (it is hiding now), that I will take the time to sit on a bench like this one and really look at the world and all the beauty I see, and enjoy it.

    • Yes, we actually have almost 13,000 according to some reports. The glaciers swept through here millions of years ago and blessed us with lots of gorgeous lakes. It really is a beautiful place yet long winters!

    • Yes it is beautiful! 🙂 But so strange to see all the spring birds singing and yet have all this snow and cold weather. It is 30 degrees below average temps. Really strange weather! 🙂

  1. Such a nice theme to post about, Nicole. As I was walking down one of the loveliest streets in Tbilisi today, I noticed that all of the benches were full. Couples and friends and families were sitting in the sunlight, happily chatting or smoking cigarettes or munching on icecream cones. I felt an immediate and irrepressible need to have my own bench somewhere, in a backyard or in my favorite park. Maybe I will steal the quote above when I finally have my own bench: “Never regret growing old, it’s a privilege denied to many.”

    • Yes I love that when you see couples and families sitting together on a bench enjoying life. 🙂 I love that quote too. It really makes me smile!

    • Oh I will Lucy! 🙂 Our weather is so crazy. It is 20-30 degrees F below average. I never remember having snow this late in the year. Scary. Last year it was too hot and now this year too cold. Fearing this climate change stuff.

  2. What nice benches with their lovely messages and snow people. (no, I don’t really mean that about the snow person- enough is enough) 🙂

    • Thanks Jo! It is beautiful despite the fact that I can never ever remember having snow this late in the year! This is really really crazy! But what can you do?

    • Thanks! I was on a walk on Friday and it was snowing and I saw this beautiful green bench. I loved the snow around it and the quote was like an extra bonus! 🙂

    • Thanks! Now we need that darn snow to melt. I can’t believe we are having so much snow and it is mid-April!!! I never have experienced this kind of long winter before. Really strange!

  4. I love to take photos of empty benches. Hope spring arrives there soon. It peeks its head out here in Ohio then retreats once again. 🙁

    • Me too! It is still crazy weather though. Still snowing. Normally this kind of unseasonable weather lasts only a day or two but this has gone on for weeks. Hopefully by May it will be over! This must be record setting as I never remember a winter this long!
