“May I never miss a sunset or rainbow because I am looking down”.  Sara June Parker

One thing I’ve learned is there is nothing like a gorgeous, undisturbed, peaceful sunset. Sunset has always been a celebrated, magical event.  For who doesn’t love a beautiful sunset?

I believe, to witness a sunset in a place where no one else is around makes it even better. To indulge in the beauty of our planet and its inexplicable wonder never ceases to stir a wondering soul.

“It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream”. -Bern Williams

Photos from our first night sunset over lovely Rabbit Lake in northern Minnesota.

After the s’mores and a glass of delicious full-bodied malbac, it was time to put on my lifejacket and go for a little spin on the lake. Was I going to take the easy way out on a motor boat? No way. I was going to go alone on a simple yellow kayak.

I tucked in the kids and kissed them goodnight. My husband Paul stayed behind to make sure they fell asleep while I slipped out the sliding glass door of the cabin, grabbing my camera and the one-person yellow kayak.

The loons were howling their melodic, tragic wail and I headed east directly into the fading sun.

“We sleep, but the loom of life never stops and the pattern which was weaving when the sun went down is weaving when it comes up to-morrow. “- Henry Ward Beecher

It was the perfect night. The water was still, the air was pleasant and warm and the sun was doing her magic tricks on the low-laying, powder-puff clouds in the horizon.

It was so insanely beautiful that I had to stop and just float for a moment as I stared in awe and amazement at the enormous beauty of the colorful tapestry upon my eyes. I wanted to freeze this moment in time, capture it in my heart and soul forever. But as we all know, time is an endless river, flowing faster and faster towards the sea.

A ray of light burst up towards the darkening sky. I couldn’t take my eyes away from it nor the golden-rose clouds. If Heaven exists, I picture it like this…..

I continued to head east, pulled by the sun and its unearthly beauty. I want to stay here forever and embrace the serenity I unexpectedly felt. If only I could close my eyes and dream.

“To watch a sunset is to connect with the Divine.” – Gina De Gorna

Yet the loons are calling me, beckoning me to come closer. So I gently paddle the silky smooth lake and glide towards the sun….

I see nothing but openness and possibility. “The world is my oyster” my father always said….

“Sunsets are so beautiful that they almost seem as if we were looking through the gates of Heaven.” – John Lubbock

I glided effortlessly into the abyss of fleeting light. Hues of pinks and oranges casted shadows across the smooth lake. I couldn’t think of a better moment of paradise then to be here, embracing and engulfing the beauty of life.

  1. There are times, when all alone, marvelling at a sunset’s beauty, I also think this way, “Sunsets are so beautiful that they almost seem as if we were looking through the gates of Heaven.” Breathtaking images that takes us to a place of peace and wonder. Thanks.

      1. It was really hot before I came, but I am finding it OK. Others are saying it is too hot and steamy, but I think I am used to it since it is WAY hotter and WAY more humid in Shanghai, so this is just right.
