Photo taken on top of Santa Maria Volcano in Xela, Guatemala
After waking up at 4:30 am to climb the Volcan Santa Maria in the heart of Xela, Guatemala, I was so overwhelmed by the nearby volcanic eruption that I messed with the settings on my new camera while trying to find the video record button. Somehow or another, I ended up with this setting which I am assuming meant to make the colors literally as vivid as possible and jump out of the page at you.
I chose this picture for unusual as it was a clear day only five minutes before the nearby eruption which combined with the intense winds at over 12,000 feet brought in these crazy clouds that appeared out of nowhere.
The Santa Maria Volcano plays an important sacred place in the heart of the Mayan people and for that moment I could almost feel it too. As I snapped this crazy picture that I was going to delete, I could hear a group of 30 or so Mayans chanting in prayer after the volcano erupted. It was quite a mystical experience. Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t delete this crazy photo!
