Spring beckons….

March 22, 2013 by thirdeyemom

I went for run around my beloved lake today and felt the first signs of a long awaited Spring. The sun was beaming down brilliantly, birds were singing in joy and the winter thaw was finally beginning to subside. All I wanted to do was yell and scream in utter, absolute joy! I love the rush of renewal and rebirth that Spring brings. After a very long winter in Minnesota, there is nothing more invigorating and refreshing than the arrival […]

Plus holiday time means lots and lots of eating!

“It’s the most crazy time of the year”!

November 29, 2012 by thirdeyemom

I know that the holiday season is often known as the “most wonderful time of the year” but for me it always means craziness! Busy, busy, busy. When I think of all that is going on over the next month and all I have to do, it feels like I’m looking up at the Eiffel Tower! A huge feat!

The liquid of the lake that feeds my soul

November 23, 2012 by thirdeyemom

“Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books.”  -John Lubbock  Growing up in Minnesota, land of over 10,000 lakes, water has always been a part of my life. For me, the restorative power of water symbolizes many things. Water means life, beauty, peace, tranquility, adventure and nature. In all my forty years, I have only lived away from […]

The Daily Run: Welcome Fall!

September 19, 2012 by thirdeyemom

It seems a bit ironic that I just posted Jakesprinter’s Sunday Post on Autumn and was complaining about the lack of fall. As a born and bred Minnesotan, I should know that it always arrives the third week of September. The dry summery weather finally gave a last hurrah on Sunday followed by a welcomed surprise: A nice Canadian clipper rolled into town on Monday bringing the cool, breezy weather that reminds me of fall. Despite the draught here, we […]

The Daily Run: Running on high speed

June 28, 2012 by thirdeyemom

It has proved to be an extremely busy, crazy summer so far and it isn’t even half-way over yet. Not at all that I am complaining!  I love summer, especially here in Minnesota where we get perfect, summer days with lots of sun and fun outdoors playing at the beach, swimming in the lake, boating, biking, grilling out and just reading a book as the sun sets well past ten. I just happen to have an awful lot on my […]

The Daily Run: Summer dreams

May 31, 2012 by thirdeyemom

We are almost at the start of summer and I can hardly hold back my excitement.  The kids have only four days left of school, my garden is in full bloom, the birds are singing and the sun is rising at 5 am.  Ah, the joy and freedom of summer! As usual, summer means a wondrous, crazy, jam-packed three months of fun.  I looked at our calendar and we have not a single weekend free. Everything is booked up with […]

The Daily Run: Signs of Summer

May 2, 2012 by thirdeyemom

After spending my morning helping my son Max’s first grade class dissect owl pellets*, it was time for my daily run.  (*They are doing a science session on raptors and last week I chaperoned a bus-load of loud, crazy first graders over to the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center….really cool!). All I can say is thank you thank you thank you!!!!!   Today I felt the first signs of summer and it made me feel very young.  I played music […]

The Daily Run that didn’t happen

April 19, 2012 by thirdeyemom

Photo taken of the Minneapolis skyline from North Minneapolis.  I really needed a run today.  But it just wasn’t in the cards.  Instead, what did I do?

The Daily Run: Why I love my lake

April 11, 2012 by thirdeyemom

Photo of the lovely urban Lake Harriet, one of over 13,000 lakes in the state of Minnesota.   How do I love my lake?  Let me tell you so…. It inspires me, connects me, detoxifies my soul.  It brings me back to nature and far away from the busy, stressful lives of modern day America.  It helps me to forget my never-ending “to do” list, my worries or concerns.  It erases the horrific images of the destruction, death and darkness […]

The Daily Run: The world’s war on vaccines and how we can promote awareness

March 21, 2012 by thirdeyemom

I’ve been back from Guatemala for a little over a week and just like that Minnesota’s winter is long gone.  We had a wimpy winter this year which has disappointed the true winter diehards and has delighted the rest.  Snowfall has been well below average, temperatures have been at least 20-30 degree F higher than normal, and last Sunday the unthinkable happened:  The ice melted off of Lake Harriet!  A record breaker in itself (earliest ice melt time was April […]
