Rooftops

May 10, 2013 by thirdeyemom

This week’s photo challenge happens to be a favorite of mine: Pattern. I adore the patterns of the brilliant rusty orange-colored tiled rooftop found in homes throughout the world. Two places in particular have my favorite styles: Southern France and Antigua, Guatemala. Here is a sample of some of the dynamic patterned rooftops I’ve captured throughout my travels. The Doors of Paris

April 29, 2013 by thirdeyemom

“Life was meant to be lived, and curiosity must be kept alive. One must never, for whatever reason, turn his back on life”. – Eleanor Roosevelt In Paris, which is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, I found myself always craning my neck and looking up. Up at the gorgeous architecture and the overly ornate doors that withhold centuries of history. Perhaps my borderline obsession with doors is the mystery of what lurks behind. Or else it […]

The Culture of Paris

April 27, 2013 by thirdeyemom

This week’s photo challenge, Culture, is quite fitting since I literally just got off the plane from Paris which is perhaps the culture capital of the world. Still jet-lagged and behind, I had a chance to upload my photos from my trip to France and have an astounding number to sort through: 1,400 taken in nine days flat! (I broke my record!). I only went through the first set of photos this morning but feel they portray an excellent look […]

Granada

May 30, 2012 by thirdeyemom

After leaving Cordoba, our next stop on our driving tour of Andalusia was Granada, by far my most favorite place in southern Spain.  Granada is an romantic, beautiful city.  Located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and tucked between two hills and two rivers, Granada has a lot of bang for the buck.  Its beauty stemming from its Moorish past is constantly admired through its lovely white-washed buildings, beautiful plazas, magnificent fountains and of course, the crown jewel of […]

The Sunday Post: Doors

May 26, 2012 by thirdeyemom

Jakesprinter’s Sunday Post of the week in a wonderful topic:  Doors. Doors are fascinating. They are also quite mysterious for who knows what lies behind the doors of a place. They are the gatekeeper when closed. Yet when opened, they offer you a look into a whole new world of possibilities inside. When I think of doors, there is one place in particular in which I was utterly blown away by the doors:  Guatemala. This colorful country had perhaps some of the […]

Cordoba

May 23, 2012 by thirdeyemom

We left Madrid early the next morning and flew to Seville where we would pick up our car and start our driving tour of Andalusia.  When we had planned this trip, there were too many places that we wanted to see in too little time.  In retrospect, what we did in our short time was way too much and we learned a valuable lesson about traveling.  Never do too much in too little of time.  You will end up not […]

Finding destruction and rebirth in the ruins of San Francisco

May 1, 2012 by thirdeyemom

Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.  -Frank Gehry It was nearing the end of the day and perhaps Lucy chose to save the best for last.  We had time to see just one more set of ruins in Antigua.  The spectacular ruins of the church of San Francisco. The building was constructed in 1542 only to be hit by a series of damaging earthquakes in 1565, 1717, 1751 and 1773.  Thankfully a tremendous amount […]

The handicraft market alongside the ruins of El Carmen

April 29, 2012 by thirdeyemom

The ruins of El Carmen are yet another set of impressive, post earthquake ruins that raise up to the Antiguan sky.  Unfortunately these ruins are not open to the public, however, the colorful Mercado del Carmen, a Mayan textile market, is open and ready for business.  I found this series of photos around the ruins of El Carmen to be some of my most favorite from the trip.  The array of colors, culture and architecture capture the heart and soul […]

The ruins of the Iglesia y Convento de Santa Clara

April 29, 2012 by thirdeyemom

After the delightful scene of the women washing at La Tanque de la Union, Lucy and I went to see the nearby ruins of Santa Clara where we were in for yet another surprise.   Established by two Mexican sisters, the Iglesia y Convento de Santa Clara was inaugurated in 1734 only to be destroyed 40 years later by a massive earthquake.  Not much of this ornate structure was left intact however perhaps by an act of grace the church’s […]
