Mothers around the world

May 12, 2013 by thirdeyemom

In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought I’d post some photos of the mother’s around the world I’ve seen. The more I travel and learn about mother’s in other countries through my advocacy work, the more and more I realize that we are all the same. We are all mothers whose number one priority in life is our children. Nurturing, loving, holding, and caring for our babies from the first time we birth them to the time they leave us […]

The wisdom of a bench

April 14, 2013 by thirdeyemom

This week’s travel theme by  Where’s My Backpack is benches. The beauty of a bench is something sometimes easily missed. Yet for me, as I live in Minnesota, land of 10,000 lakes and many beautiful parks, there are benches everywhere.

The change that hasn’t come

April 12, 2013 by thirdeyemom

“Because things are the way they are, things will not stay the way they are” –  Bertolt Brecht This time last year, we were basking in the sunshine embracing the gorgeous beauty, energy and rejuvination that springtime brings to Minnesotans. On this day last year, spring was in full force with leaves bursting anew in a brilliant tapestry of verdant, virgin green. The telltale signs of spring – brightly colored tulips, deep purple pasque flowers and singing birds- were everywhere. […]

The passage of time

March 23, 2013 by thirdeyemom

Ailsa’s travel theme this week is the sensational concept of time. I am huge on reflection and when I thought of the subject of time, I brought myself back twenty years to where I was then and where I will be in a month’s time: Lovely Paris.

Desperately awaiting Spring

March 19, 2013 by thirdeyemom

I should understand by now that the long-awaited arrival of Spring in Minnesota is a temperamental thing. Last year at this time, it was unseasonably warm and we were basking in the sun wearing shorts and t-shirts. This year, we are buried under snow and below zero wind chills. Minnesotans are getting frustrated and stir crazy. After five long months of winter, we just want to be outside listening to the birds sing and watching in awe as color and […]

Guatemalan Green

March 16, 2013 by thirdeyemom

This week’s travel theme from Ailsa of Where’s my Backpack happens to be the color green in honor of Spring and St. Patrick’s Day. I know I’m rather obsessed with Guatemala and have used my photos for many posts now, two of which have been Freshly Pressed (The Color of Guatemala and The Green of Guatemala). However, since Spring is so far off from a reality here in Minnesota I had to dig back through my archives and pull up […]

The Power of Ideas

March 12, 2013 by thirdeyemom

This past weekend was insanely inspiring. I was exceptionally lucky to attend the 25th Annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum held here in Minneapolis, which honors past Nobel Laureates and some of the world’s top activists and luminaries all coming together to discuss the power of peacemaking. It was absolutely amazing and there couldn’t be a more thought-provoking series of lectures and break-out sessions than what I had the pleasure of participating in for the past two and a half days. This year’s […]

The World in Black and White

March 11, 2013 by thirdeyemom

Over the weekend I had the honor of attending the Nobel Peace Prize Forum here in Minneapolis where I was utterly inspired by the messages of hope. The suffering that people around the world face on a daily basis gives me even more motivation and urgency to help in whatever way I can whether it be through advocacy, volunteering, education, photography or simply my words. Sometimes the world becomes overbearing to me and the suffering and injustice of millions of […]

The Joy of Spring Flowers

March 10, 2013 by thirdeyemom

“That though the radiance which was once so bright be now forever taken from my sight. Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind”. – William Wordsworth Spring time is still a ways off here in Minnesota where the landscape is still blanketed in snow. Depending on the year Spring can begin anywhere in early to mid April and usually is […]

Lost in the details on a street in Antigua

March 1, 2013 by thirdeyemom

One of my all time favorite cities in the world is Antigua, Guatemala. I could spend days walking its picturesque cobblestone streets colored in rainbow hues and loaded with history. Every building has a story to tell which can be found by looking into the details of the layers of paint and crumbled buildings sprouting with plants. Follow me along and look carefully at the details of a street in lovely Antigua….
