Birthday in the Blue Mountains

August 31, 2011 by thirdeyemom

On Saturday, December 6th it was our third day in Sydney and my 32nd Birthday. It felt a little strange given the time change as it really wasn’t my birthday at home in the States. It was only December 5th. But in the land Down Under, today was the day so why not celebrate? (I was still at the age where I enjoyed my birthday and still felt relatively young…ha). It was a free day ahead and I got to […]

An unexpected trip to the land Down Under

August 30, 2011 by thirdeyemom

My trip to Patagonia back in November 2003 had been a eye-opening, soul-searching adventure of a lifetime.  I had been in perhaps the most stressful, worst job ever so getting away from the hell I was in at the time, to such a magical place, felt like a boulder had been lifted off my chest.  I could breathe again.  I could relax.  I could enjoy life.  I could be me. But then as they always say in life, all good things […]

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! The difficult act of letting go….

August 28, 2011 by thirdeyemom

Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own.   And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go. OH! THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! -Dr. Seus Tomorrow is it. The day that took six and a half years to come. My son’s first full day […]

Home Sweet Home

August 28, 2011 by thirdeyemom

After a long grueling day of travel with two kids, we are finally home sweet home in Minnesota once again. As much as I absolutely love to travel, there is something to be said about being and coming home. What else could be better than coming home to your own place, your own space and best of all your own bed? Sometimes I feel like I could travel forever but I know this not really true. Because I’ve reached a […]

Who would have thought that trees could be so amazing?

August 26, 2011 by thirdeyemom

Yesterday was my last hike in the White Mountains of Arizona. It wasn’t the hike that I had imagined or wanted to do. Not the 16-miler haul to Mount Baldy. Instead, it was a much shorter hike to a different part of the White Mountains where perhaps we would be able to see some wildlife and scenic views. We left early in the morning and unfortunately the monsoon clouds were already forming and turning black. It was not a good […]

Sunrise and Monsoon Clouds over Arizona’s White Mountains

August 25, 2011 by thirdeyemom

For the past week that I’ve been vacationing in the White Mountains of Northeastern Arizona, I’ve begun to see and understand the wild and crazy swings in weather due to the summer monsoon season. You would think that in a desert climate such as Arizona, that it never ever rains. That is true for the most part. For most of the year, it hardly if ever rains. However, once summer nears and the monsoon season begins, it is a whole […]

In Search of 300-year-old Firs

August 24, 2011 by thirdeyemom

Note to readers: I am here on vacation in the White Mountains of northeast Arizona, home to the largest freestanding Ponderosa Pine Trees in the world, thinking that I would be writing my next few posts on a past trip to Australia. Before leaving, I uploaded all my pictures from Australia and prepared some of the posts. Yet, when I arrived here in the small, hilltop town of Show Low, Arizona, I realized that I was missing the “third eye”. […]

Huge fundraising night for HANDS IN NEPAL

August 22, 2011 by thirdeyemom

This week my children and I are spending some time visiting my parents in gorgeous, sunny Arizona, at their home in the White Mountains. The White Mountains are located about three hours northeast of Phoenix and range in elevation from 5,000-11,4000 feet at their highest point of Mount Baldy. This area is famous for one of the largest collection of Ponderosa Pines in the state and their fragrance is present wherever you go. Last night, my mother and I hosted […]

Farewell Patagonia…until we meet again

August 21, 2011 by thirdeyemom

The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.  – Samuel Jackson  We woke up Saturday morning to perhaps one of the most perfect days in Patagonia.  The birds were singing in full glory to welcome the rising sun above the serene Patagonian landscape.  The sky was as blue as the sea and clear except for a few lazy powder puff clouds lingering off in […]

The unforgettable hike to the flagship “Torres” del Paine

August 19, 2011 by thirdeyemom

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson  Today was it.  The final leg of the “W” trek to the infamous, mysterious las torres, the towers, which are the trademark of this incredible park.  It was going to be a long, tiring hike taking […]
